A Love for Baking: Q&A with Rosanna Pansino

Rosanna Pansino is an entrepreneur, actress and culinary personality who is best known for her YouTube cooking show, “Nerdy Nummies,” which she launched in June of 2011. Today she has over 8.8 million subscribers and her channel has received over 2.1 billion views. Ro recently partnered up with Michaels and Wilton to create her first-ever baking line, which aims to bring out the creative geek in everyone. We caught up with her for a quick Q&A to learn a bit more about the product line and Ro.

How did you get started with baking?

My Grandmother was the person who originally introduced me to baking. I have such good memories of my family getting together for special occasions and baking together in the kitchen. All through high school and college I loved baking themed treats for my friends.

Why was Wilton the right fit?

I have used Wilton products for as long as I can remember and in the very first episode of Nerdy Nummies I am using Wilton icing. I am very picky about who I work with, which is why Wilton was the perfect company to partner with.

What was your favorite part about creating this product line?

Creating a product line was something completely new for me. I wanted to wait to do it until the time was right and I could do it right. The line itself took over a year to develop and I loved being very hands on during the process. Wilton really worked to make my vision for the line come to life and I’m excited to see people’s response to it!

Where do you find inspiration?

I get inspiration from everywhere. I have a very active mind that can be hard to turn off. Even when I’m in the shower I’ll be drawing ideas on the glass door. I have always loved being creative.

Do you have a favorite project? Why is it your favorite?

My new projects often become my favorites as I’m constantly learning something new, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be any video that I’ve had my Dad as a guest. I’m really close to my family and any chance I get to share my world with them is very special.

What’s your favorite part about meeting your fans?

I am convinced that I have the nicest and sweetest viewers in the world. Any time I release a product or go to a convention I try and work meetups into them. My supporters energize me and always put a smile on my face.

Do you have a favorite dessert? What is it?

My favorite dessert is constantly changing because I never stop learning new recipes. That said, I am absolutely loving tiramisu right now because I am a big coffee drinker.

3 New Ways to Decorate Your Gingerbread House

One long-standing tradition for the holiday season is decorating a gingerbread house. When it comes to decorating, the possibilities are endless – you just have to use your imagination! We can help get your creativity moving with these three new ways to decorate your gingerbread house.

1. Color Mist

Silver Gingerbread House

Give your gingerbread house a fresh paint job with Color Mist Food Color Spray. Make your house shine bright for the holidays with a beautiful silver finish, or use red for a house filled with holiday cheer. Use pearl Color Mist to add a coat of shimmer to any color, or use it on the gingerbread alone for a subtle sparkle. For the most even coverage, let each coat of Color Mist dry for at least 5 minutes before starting the next coat. Use white icing to pipe windows, doors, icicles and snowflake detail on the house. Get the how-to here.Color Mist Gingerbread House

2. FoodWriters

Artfully Drawn Gingerbread Cottage

Have a knack for drawing? If yes, this idea is perfect for you! Use assorted FoodWriters to draw doors, windows, shingles and designs on each panel of the house. This is also a fun and easy way for children to add their own personal touch to gingerbread decorating. It’s easiest to draw on each panel before assembling your house, but you can also use FoodWriters on a finished house to add accents and finishing touches. Use a straight edge or a ruler to help draw straight lines. Draw on each panel before assembling your house, then attach with icing according to the instructions. See how it’s done here.

3. Fondant

Gingerbread House with Fondant Decorations

Fondant is an easy way to add beautiful accents to your gingerbread house, and fondant pieces make great detail for the roof. Roll out chocolate fondant to 1/8 of an inch thick, then use the round end of tip 1M to cut out small circles. Use a food safe paint brush to wet the back of each piece with water, then attach the pieces to the roof. Make sure to offset and overlap each piece to look like shingles. Get the full details here.

I hope these ideas have inspired you to try something new with your gingerbread decorating tradition! Share your gingerbread creations with us on Instagram using #MakeItWithMichaels!

2015 Wilton Sweet Up

Just a couple of weeks ago I had the honor of joining some of our Michaels Makers at the Wilton Sweet Up where we learned about new delicious trends and innovations in the baking world. We even got to try out some of their brand new products!

On the first night, we got to mingle with other bloggers and test out some sweet treats. Wilton’s team presented their top baking and decorating trends of 2015:

2015trendsfinal_1

I’m really excited about incorporating watercolor into baking. It’s such a beautiful art… why not use it to decorate your baked treats as well? And some of those flavor combinations sound sultry and delightful. These trends are really about elevating your flavors and designs.

We were given samples of the marvelous merveilleux – a meringue sandwich with layers of whipped cream that was rolled in sprinkles. It was light and airy and the perfect sweet bite.

smore truffle

Next we sampled a s’mores truffle. This one hails from the Dessert Mashups Remix trend… turning a classic dessert into a new form. The center of the truffle was a mini marshmallow that is coated in S’mores Candy Melts (coming soon!) and then rolled in graham cracker crumbs. How easy is that?

Lastly, they unveiled the 2015 Cake of the Year. This year’s theme was “Celebration of Women” and I think this cake represents that just perfectly.2015 Cake of the Year2015 Cake of the YearOn day 2 of the Sweet Up, we were up bright and early for somehands-on sessions. We started off with The Art of Cookie Decorating with Amber of Sweet Ambs. She is one talented cookie decorator! Here are just a few of her designs:

Sweet Ambs CookiesSweet Ambs CookiesShe showed us how to outline and flood a cookie with royal icing. It actually wasn’t as difficult as it looks! The trick is to move quickly or your icing will start to dry before you are done decorating! We used Wilton’s new Color Right Performance Color System to tint our royal icing. This system gives you the exact formulations to create specific colors. No more guessing and trying when you have to make a second batch of frosting!

These were my first attempts:Color Right SystemAfter our cookie decorating session, we packed up and headed over to the Wilton School of Decorating for a lesson in boozy baking.

Mega Mini Muffin PanWe made White Russian Cookie Cups, as well as Bloody Mary Muffins with a compound butter. We used the new Perfect Results pans which feature a Mega Cookie Pan & Mega Mini Muffin Pan. If you’ve ever need to bake for a large event, you’ll want to get these pronto!Boozy BakingWhite Russian Cookie CupsGiggles Galore, Love the Day, Just Destiny & I paused for a Sweet Up Selfie.sweet-up-selfieAnother fun innovation that Wilton introduced to us was their new Treatology™ Flavor System. These are concentrated gourmet flavorings that enhance icing, cake batter, cookies, dessert fillings and more. We had a blind taste test, and all of the combinations were just delicious! I really can’t wait to use these in my baking.

Wilton TreatologyOur last session of the day was with Jenny Keller of Jenny Cookies.  Not only is she a cookie decorating pro, she is an all-star at creating jaw-dropping dessert tables and partyscapes. After a quick tutorial, we were let loose on a dessert table decorating challenge. I think our team did a pretty fantastic job.Dessert TableDessert TableDessert Table

Our team won the “Brave” award for being extra resourceful. It was a sweet ending to our time at Wilton.
