Maker Monday: Roeshel from DIY Show Off

Happy Maker Monday! Roeshel encourages readers to “do-it-yourself” and create a beautiful home filled with personalization and love as well as offers DIY fans an opportunity to “show off” their DIY projects.

1. When did you start crafting?

I’ve been crafting ever since I was a little girl. I loved to keep busy by being creative – some things never change!

2. Describe your ideal environment to create a craft project.

DIY Show Off Craft RoomThe ideal environment for me to create a project is in my craft room, although it’s more likely that my crafty ideas and creative work explodes all over the dining room table.

3. What is your favorite type of craft?

Handmade gifts, crafts for entertaining and seasonal home decor are my favorite types of crafts.

4. What craft tool can you not live without?

I can’t live without my hot glue gun… or scissors… or vinyl cutter… or sewing machine… or paint brushes. Did I mention I’m indecisive?

5. What inspires your blog posts?

Transforming our old house into our forever home inspires most of my blog posts. It’s my life-sized, real-life doll house.

6. What project have you always dreamed of doing, but haven’t tackled yet?

Getting photos printed and organized into photo albums and scrapbooks is always on my to-do list. But because it feels overwhelming, it always gets pushed back down on the priority list, making it even more overwhelming. One of these days! Er…months!

7. What project are you most proud of?

DIY Pipe Cleaner Christmas TreeThere’s such a fine line between DIY and craft projects for me. And most of the time, it’s whatever I just finished working on. I get so giddy and excited – it’s my favorite project until the next project is complete. But my favorite project ‘craft-wise’ in the past year would be my pipe cleaner Christmas tree bell ornaments.

8. What project was your biggest craft fail?

Craft FailIs knitting a craft? I just can’t seem to get the hang of it!

9. Describe your craft style.

My craft style is identical to my decorating style – fickle. I just do what I love, sometimes rustic, sometimes modern, sometimes vintage, sometimes traditional.

10. What is your favorite craft trend right now?

Right now I love crafts with succulents! Doesn’t everyone?

11. Who is your favorite person to craft with?

Roeshel & FriendsCrafting is a great way to spend time with my girls!

Maker Monday: Chelsea from Lovely Indeed

It’s Maker Monday! Check out another one of our Michaels Makers bloggers and some of her crafting secrets below.

Lovely IndeedChelsea Foy is the maker behind Lovely Indeed, a DIY and lifestyle blog about all of the lovely things in life. Her work has been featured on Apartment Therapy, Buzzfeed, HGTV, Better Homes and Gardens, and more. She recently co-authored Make Your Day, a digital crafting book. Chelsea resides in Los Angeles with her adorable husband, where they spend their time exploring and looking for creative adventures.

1. When did you start crafting?

I’ve been making things ever since I can remember! My mom was always finding little bits and pieces of ephemera in her supplies that my sister and I could play with. And one of our favorite things was to go to the craft store and pick out things with our few dollars that we would save from doing chores.

2. Describe your ideal environment to create a craft project.

I have this dream room in my head, that’s all white with a zillion drawers and boxes and shelves for organization. I love making things in a really clean, plain environment so that the project is clear in my head.

3. What is your favorite type of craft?

Anything unexpected or upcycled – I love not following instructions on packages and thinking outside the box. I think it’s so fun to take an object or a supply and use it for a purpose other than the one originally intended.

4. What craft tool can you not live without?

These days, I use my paper cutter daily.

5. What inspires your blog posts?

Things that I see in the real world! Traveling and going on adventures is the most inspiring thing for me.

6. What project have you always dreamed of doing, but haven’t tackled yet?

My husband and I would love to make a reclaimed wood dining table.

7. What project are you most proud of?

Suede & Gold Mousepad

The suede and gold leaf polka dot mouse pad I made a couple of years back is still my very fave. It’s small and simple but came out better than I imagined. I use it every single day.

8. What project was your biggest craft fail?

There are almost too many to count! Most recently, I was trying to use a wood burning tool and scorched my way through a potholder!

9. Describe your craft style.

Fresh, fun, hip, and unexpected!

10. What is your favorite craft trend right now?

Gold spray paint. I want it on everything.

11. Who is your favorite person to craft with?

Lovely IndeedMy partner-in-crime husband – he’s great at tackling the large-scale stuff while I cover the details. It’s a great partnership.

Raw Bar Challenge

Michaels Makers July Challenge: Raw Bar

Our Michaels Makers were given an extra special challenge this month. Michaels has been working on a new line of products called Raw Bar – created for customers looking for raw, unfinished surfaces that are easily craft-able. The brand new Raw Bar line is a whole series of products inspired by nature. Some of the surfaces and textures you will see include burlap, cork, chalk board, wood, galvanized metal and canvas. We’re pretty excited to see what all of our customers create with the products, so what did we do? – Gave the Michaels Makers a sneak peak of the line! A package filled with Michaels’ new Raw Bar product line arrived on their doorstep with endless possibilities.

The package had the following Raw Bar items: a galvanized metal bin with chalk board front, burlap canvas, cork ribbon, burlap bag, chalk board sign, cork letters, wooden spools and clothespins.

Check out all of the fun crafts these ladies came up with!

Raw BarThe Raw Bar line will be available at all Michaels locations on August 8. Tell us which Raw Bar item you can’t wait to use!

Maker Monday: Mandy from Sugar Bee Crafts

Every few weeks we are going to spotlight one of our Michaels Makers bloggers and today marks the inaugural Maker Monday post – an inside look into what really gets these bloggers crafting.

MandyMandy Beyeler

You may know her as Sugar Bee Crafts – loves to blog and enjoys all things crafty, sewing and DIY. She feels that if she can do something, you can too, and provides tutorials to help you along the way. She loves being a mom to four awesome kiddos and blogs from the Kansas City area. To get an inside look into her world, read below!

1.     When did you start crafting?

Crafting is such a part of who I am, I’m not sure there was ever a start!  It’s just always been something I’ve loved to do, even as a kiddo.  The process of creating is just so fun and fulfilling, I can’t imagine ever not crafting.

2.     Describe your ideal environment to create a craft project.

Craft Room

I have a craft room which is great, but like anyone, I dream of bigger and better.  I would love a room with lots of windows and natural light, tons of storage space and tons of work space.  It would be clean and ready for creating (that’s how I know it’s a dream – my craft space is always in disarray!)

3.     What is your favorite type of craft?

This is tough – like asking to pick a favorite child!  I don’t know if I can narrow down a favorite craft, but I love things that are simple.  It is really gratifying to be able to create a project in one sitting, without getting frustrated with the process.  I love crafts, sewing, and DIY projects – just love them all!

4.     What craft tool can you not live without?

Glue GunSuper tough question – I try to put myself on a deserted island with only one tool, and I think the most versatile would be a hot glue gun.  It can be used in so many crafts and even can substitute for sewing if needed.

5.     What inspires your blog posts?

Simple projects – it’s what readers can replicate and enjoy, and so I love sharing those.  I love being inspired by bright fun colors and current trends and pulling those into crafts and DIY.

6.     What project have you always dreamed of doing, but haven’t tackled yet?

Ha!  I have a “to-do” Pinterest board full of projects I want to get to, “someday” – – I tend to put off the projects that are a little more involved and time consuming, but I really love when I tackle them and have a great sense of accomplishment.  Room redecorating is probably what I currently want to tackle the most.

7.     What project are you most proud of?

Giant Picture

I really, really love my giant picture – it’s super thrifty and anyone can make their own version.  I love the impact that it has and that it showcases my family.  It always gets compliments and I love that as well.

8.     What project was your biggest craft fail?

Craft FailWhen things start failing, I give up or change course pretty quickly!  Recently I was trying to make a pendant necklace out of sprinkles, but the sprinkles were dissolving in the solution – – for sure a fail!  But I was able to start over with different supplies and made it work – phew!

9.     Describe your craft style.

Bright ColorsMy craft style is bright and bold and simple.  I love bright colors and bold patterns and anything that is just FUN in style and function.

10.  What is your favorite craft trend right now?

Personalization is everywhere, and I love that – monogram projects, photo projects – anything that gives my project a personal touch.

11.  Who is your favorite person to craft with?

Sugar Bee Kiddos

I have different people I love to craft with for different reasons. Crafting with my kids makes me feel like a supermom – we get to have a fun activity to do together and I’m able to encourage their creativity and watch them explore their ideas.  I even craft with my husband (more like rope him into helping!) and that’s a fun way to spend an evening.  And then of course it’s super fun to get together as a group of friends and craft – that’s one of my favorite things to do!
