Michaels Makers August Challenge: Back to School

It’s always sad to see summer go. It seems like we were just planning trips to the beach and DIYing our flip flops and totes. The change of seasons is always a great time to get organized, whether you’re sending kids back to school, redecorating your classroom or just shaking out the sand and refreshing your home for fall. Searching for some inspiration? We were too, so we asked our Michaels Makers to share some of the creative ways that they tackle the back to school season. Take a look at their projects and let us know what you think!

Which project are you going to take on before the fall sets in? Do your kids have a favorite back to school project too?

First Day of School Sign

First Day of School Chalkboard Sign

I can’t believe that summer is already coming to an end and the first day of school is right around the corner! That sure went by quickly, didn’t it?

I’m sure a lot of you moms are out buying school supplies, new clothes and backpacks. You’re trying to get organized and back into the routine. Amidst all the rush, don’t forget to take the time and capture a snapshot of your child on their first day. You’ll look back and be thankful for the memories. So, how about a cute little First Day of School Chalkboard Sign prop?

Here’s what you need to get started:

Step 1: step-1

Paint your canvas panel with the chalkboard paint & let it dry. I’d recommend adding a second coat and drying again.

Tip: Smear chalk all over the painted canvas panel and wipe off the excess with a paper towel. This will not only prime your canvas, but it also adds to the “chalky” look.

Step 2:step-2

Draw your designs on the edge of the panel with a chalkboard marker and write your own words announcing the First Day of School.

Now all that is left is to capture a photo of your kiddo as they head off to their first day of class.

*Cue tears*

What a crafty way to make sweet memories for years to come!

Second, color is important when creating your project. Since you’ll be using a lot of it, pickup a pack of our Creatology™ Recycled Construction Paper (we are doing a science project here, so kudos to saving the earth at the same time!!).

Make your board neat and tidy by using Elmer’s® Project Popperz Accent Borderz to highlight each section. And, don’t forget your Project Popperz Vinyl Letters for the perfect easy to stick headers.

Finally, you’ll need some glue to stick it all together. We carry all kinds of Elmer’s® school glues and glue sticks, perfect for your project (and for those fun crafts you’re going to do after the project, too!)

Lots and lots of Elmer's® Glue!
